Ways To Mentally Refresh After a Stressful Day

Have you ever had such a rough day you just want to scream?  Well why not go ahead and do it!  We’ve all had stressful days and how we deal with them can look different to each person.  We are for sure living in stressful times and not finding a way to release the stress can be bad for our health.

I used to think just pushing on was the best choice.  I would store away the stress and just hope for calmer days.  This was definitely not the right choice!  All that happened was I would get more stressed and more overwhelmed.  Can you relate?  The good news is I have moved past this and have found ways to help release that stress and help me feel refreshed after one of those stressful days!  In this post I am going to share with you actionable ideas to help you do the same!

#01 Let It Out

One of the best ways I have found to deal with being overly stressed or overwhelmed is to let the feelings out!  Having them just sit inside my head doesn’t help, it actually makes it worse.  You can let it out in so many ways which is another reason why this is a great strategy!  You can talk to a friend, you can write it down, or you can even yell it out!  Just find a way that will work best for you and do it!

Sometimes when I’ve had a hard day at work I will say what is stressing me out loud while driving home.  I’m sure I look silly but who cares, it helps.  Just saying the words out loud helps me to really process why I’m having a hard day and it helps me come up with a better plan.

I also really like writing it down! I like getting down all my thoughts and then ripping up the paper into tons of pieces and throwing it out.  It is really rewarding and putting that action of ripping up the stress really helps!  You can totally burn the paper too if that helps but just do it carefully!

#02 Move Your Body

Exercise is a fantastic way to help get rid of stress!  Now it won’t solve your problems but it does help make you feel better!  I find when I exercise, solutions or ideas pop into my head.  I think it’s because it lets my mind wander away from whatever problem I’m having instead of overthinking it.   You don’t need to do an intense workout for this to be helpful.  Sometimes just a short walk will help a lot!

Don’t underestimate the power of moving your body.  Working out consistently can help you reduce your stress level because you are giving yourself an outlet to get it all out!  Keeping the stress and tension inside your body isn’t helping you and it for sure isn’t helping those around you!

#03 Finding Something You Love

There comes a time whenever I’m really stressed that I just need to walk away from whatever is causing it.  It could be a project I’m working on, the laundry, or really anything.  This goes for anything that is causing you to feel stressed and overwhelmed.  I’m not talking about ditching your problem or your responsibility but taking a 5 minute break away from it can help you calm down.

When I do this I love to color! It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, just a page I printed off line and some markers.  The calm it brings me helps me to refocus and get ready to tackle whatever the issue is once again.  Find something you love to do and whenever you are really feeling overwhelmed take a break for a little bit and do something you really enjoy doing.  Then once you’ve taken a nice little break, get back in there with a new mindset!

#04 Find the Good

Whenever I’m really having a tough time I make myself think about what positive spin I can put on it.  Now listen, this isn’t easy and it wasn’t something I was able to do right away.  Sometimes I’m in such a stressed place I can’t find a positive right away and that is ok also but I always take a few minutes to try and find it.

I heard this quote once, “What if it isn’t happening to you, but for you.”  And that quote has stuck with me for years because it really helps you to put a positive spin on a crappy situation.  Think back now to some stressful times and think about what has come out of it as a result.

Whenever I’m having one of those days I say that quote to myself.  It helps me just shift my mindset for a minute and helps me to realize that it won’t be like this forever.

So there you have it, these are my tried and true methods for dealing with my stressful days.  I wanted to share them with you because let’s face it, we all get stressed.  It took me some time to find methods that really helped me to release it and I’m so glad I put in the work to actively find them!
