Being a busy working mom finding any available time in our schedule can get hard at times. I’m sure you can relate. So many times I hear people say they want to workout more but they just don’t have the time. I totally get that but guess what? It doesn’t have to be that way! There are so many options for workouts right now that you will be able to find something that fits your schedule, if you really want to.
In this post I am going to tell you where I choose to workout and why I made that choice. Now this is my ideal scenario. What I do might not work for you at all and that is perfectly fine. I am not here to tell you how to workout or where! You are going to have to decie that. I just want you to see how you can make exercise work even with having a busy schedule!
My Ideal Workout Option
To give you the full picture I started working out again after I had my oldest son, who is just turning 8! I joined the local crossfit gym my husband was going to, reluctantly I might add. Knowing how out of shape I was and walking into that gym was so overwhelming but with a little help from the girls there that I had met through my husband, I gave it a shot. I ended up loving it and joined. I stayed at that gym until my youngest was about 3 so about 5 years.
The style of workout fit me perfectly but having two kids and working full time made it hard for me to get there. I will say I was so lucky to have a group of girls around me that stepped up to help. They would hold my boys or play with them so I could finish my workout. But the truth is, it got really hard. I was at the point where I was dreading going.
I remember it being the middle of winter, in NY, getting home from work and trying to get everything done. Then bundling up an infant and a 2 year old to go to the gym. My other option was having someone come and watch them which was hard to work out!
I slowly started to see more options to do the style of workouts I loved but at home. The moment I saw Street Parking show up on Instagram I knew it would be the answer for me. I love the crossfit style of workout but I just can’t fit in time to make it to the gym. I’ve been working out at home for over 3 years and I love every second of it.
This was the absolute best option for me. I can now get a workout done in 45 minutes and have no travel time back and forth. I don’t have to drag anyone with me or try to find a time that fits best into their schedules. Working out from home gave me the freedom to get it done whenever I could. Some days that means I do my workout outside in the driveway or in our small play area in our house. I’ve also done workouts on the sidelines of soccer practices or the parking lots of their camps. I have the option to get it done whenever and wherever I need to now and for me that is how I became consistent!
The Downfall
Now I know what some of you are already thinking because well, so many people told me it was a bad idea. I had friends think I was crazy and that I wouldn’t be able to workout the same way. They weren’t being negative, they were geniuely caring about me when the said it. I just knew I had to make the move.
I spent a while telling you why it was the best option for me but that doesn’t mean it is always perfect. There is for sure better motivation at the gym and when I workout with other people I push myself harder. Working out at home requires dedication. If you rely just on feeling motivated you are going to struggle, especially in the beginning.
It took a lot of will power and drive to get myself to a point where I am consistently, 5 days a week, working out by myself at home. I’m not saying this to talk you out of it but I want you to realize it isn’t easy. I set myself up for so many excuses being home but I’ve learned to push through them.
And if I’m being totally honest here, the second someone told me I couldn’t do it, well that was all the drive I needed really. I am a person who will always work hard but have someone tell me I can’t do something and you can guarantee I will either make it happen or give it more than my best trying!
But Does It Matter?
So workout at the gym or at home, does it matter? That’s a big no. It doesn’t matter at all. At the end of the day the most important thing you can do is find what works for you and do it. It doesn’t matter what your friends or family are doing. If you want to be consistent you need to love what you’re doing and you need to find something that fits your lifestyle. If you don’t do those two things it is going to be hard to be consistent and get the results you want!
Forget what everyone says and go out there and find something you love that you can do for yourself! You don’t need anyone’s permission to think outside the box on this one!
And there you have it, why I chose to workout at home but more importantly that it doesn’t matter where you get it done!
